Those numbers are a bit startling, but here's the good news: by making a few adjustments, you can take proactive steps to protect your heart. We know how easy it is to get lost in the details of a project, spending hours hunched over fabric samples or CAD drawings. But prolonged sitting can be a strain on your heart. But there are some so-called productivity hacks circulating out there that, if not approached correctly, might paradoxically hinder your progress. Let’s look at six examples!

1. Excessive Multitasking

The ability to juggle client meetings, design drafting, and supplier negotiations all at once seems like a superpower. The truth is that, just like we don’t have chameleon eyes, our brains aren't wired to handle multiple tasks effectively at the same time. Research suggests that multitasking can lead to reduced quality of work, increased stress levels, and even a drop in IQ comparable to missing a night's sleep. For tasks that require deep thought and creativity, like designing a living space, focusing on one task at a time ensures the highest quality of work and innovation.

Engaging with followers in real-time, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses into your design process, and leaving a little room for the spontaneity of real life can foster a stronger, more genuine connection with your audience, even if it means spending a bit more time on social media.

4. Skipping Breaks to Work Through

The myth that working longer hours without breaks boosts productivity is just that—a myth. Especially for interior designers, whose work demands high levels of creativity and problem-solving, taking regular breaks is essential. Skipping breaks can lead to burnout and a noticeable decline in the quality of your designs. A Biltmore Christmas Movie Review

Much like the architect of the Biltmore House, Richard Morris Hunt, the screenwriter for A Biltmore Christmas, Marcy Holland, and the director, John Putch, built a masterpiece. Hallmark came through with one of the most spectacular Christmas movies I’ve seen to date.

The infusion of old Hollywood with the iconic Biltmore Estate and the magic of Christmas weaves an epic tale that transcends time. “I’ve got a very good feeling about this little picture. I think it’s going to be the one.” Jack Huston.

The vast estate is like nothing being built today. It’s castle-like appearance, expansive rooms and ornate details highlight everything special and magical about the rich history of that time. The furniture, the tapestries, and that LIBRARY! I could get lost for days just reading, writing, and creating in front of the enormous fireplace.

This Christmas adventure begins when Lucy Hardgrove (Bethany Joy Lenz), a realist, is tasked with writing the remake for a classic Hollywood film, His Merry Wife!, that was filmed in 1947 at the Biltmore Estate. Struggling to come up with a realistic ending to the film, the studio head sends her to gain a brighter perspective and draw some inspiration from the Biltmore House.

After turning over an hourglass used in the original film, Lucy is transported back to the 1947 set of His Merry Wife! and befriends one of the film’s stars Jack Huston (Kristoffer Polaha). She discovers she’s able to hop back and forth between her reality and the past until the hourglass breaks while she’s in 1947, leaving her there until the magical prop is repaired.

While stuck in 1947 she realizes that her appearances has unleashed a series of events that could not only jeopardize the original film’s existence but leave her trapped in the past forever.

As much as I’d love to continue to write about what happens next, I really want you to watch the movie. I laughed, I cried, and I watched it multiple times.

This film was inspiring to me as a writer, inspiring to me as a designer and on a random note may have inspired a mother-of-the bride hairstyle. Lucy’s hairstyle at the Christmas Eve party was amazing!

The performances by the entire cast were outstanding! As much as I love Lenz in everything she does, and she did not disappoint in this film, it was Polaha who stole the show! At the end of the day, if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know what I mean when I write – who needs Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds when you have Bethany Joy Lenz and Kristoffer Polaha.

A Biltmore Christmas

Disclaimer: I am a Hallmark nerd!

I am so excited to write this post I can hardly sit still. I sat down to write this and then had to run an unexpected errand and it was as if I was a child on Christmas morning waiting patiently for my mother to get her coffee so my siblings and I could start ripping open perfectly wrapped packages. Finally, I’m back at my desk.

Not only am I a huge fan of the Biltmore Estate, the iconic American estate located in Asheville, North Carolina, but I am a huge fan of Hallmark Christmas movies. Over the years they have become more clever, more humorous, and overall, more enjoyable. Last year they filmed one of my beloved Christmas movies at the Biltmore and it airs this year on November 26 on Hallmark.

I first learned about the Biltmore House in interior design school and whether you were formerly taught or self-taught I just assume that every interior designer knows about the Biltmore, just as they know about Frank Lloyd Wright or David Hicks.

But if you are unfamiliar - The Biltmore was built in 1889-1895 by the Vanderbilt family. It is a 250-room French Renaissance chateau with a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The house contains over four acres of floor space, including 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces.

The 8,000-acre property is now a one-of-a-kind destination and besides the mansion, includes an art exhibit, a winery, dining, shopping, 20+ miles of nature trails, and a hotel. You can truly experience the magic of the Biltmore for days at a time if you desire.

Visiting the Biltmore around the holiday season is a bucket list item of mine and this year not only is A Biltmore Christmas airing on Hallmark, but a mini-documentary called “Behind the Magic” aired and debuted November 2 on YouTube.

A Biltmore Christmas stars Bethany Joy Lenz (loved her in One Tree Hill and other Hallmark Christmas favorites such as An Unexpected Christmas with my Hallmark boyfriend, Tyler Hynes) and Kristoffer Polaha (he’s one of my favorite Hallmark leading men after… did I mention Tyler Hynes?).

Bethany as Lucy Hardgrove, a modern-day screenwriter, and Polaha as Jack Huston, the lead in a beloved holiday movie His Merry Wife!, first filmed at the Biltmore House in 1947 star in this magical, time-traveling, historical Christmas movie. In the film, the classic movie, His Merry Wife! is scheduled to be re-filmed at the iconic estate, but a mysterious hourglass intervenes, and Lucy is transported back in time to 1946 as the cast and crew prepare to re-make the classic movie. So, this is a Christmas movie, within a Christmas movie re-make of a Christmas movie … I think.

Some fun facts about the movie from the Biltmore website:

  • 8 vintage cars were used during the film.

  • 200 yards of artificial snow were used.

  • 9 rooms inside the Biltmore were used for filming.

  • 4 of the 9 rooms were decorated with a 1940s theme.

  • 2 exterior locations directly attached to the Biltmore House were used for filming scenes, including The Loggia and the Library Terrace.

  • 4 rooms in The Inn on Biltmore Estate (the onsite hotel) were used as film sets.

  • 11 costumes were worn by Bethany Joy Lenz.

Super fun facts about Christmas at the Biltmore:

  • The banquet hall alone features 500 lights, 500 presents, and 500 ornaments.

  • 67 decorated Christmas trees inside Biltmore House.

  • The largest tree inside the house is a 35-foot-tall Fraser fir that requires 50 staff members to carry in, raise and secure.

  • 45 additional decorated Christmas trees are at other estate locations.

  • 45,000 lights and 282 candles inside the home.

  • Another 850,000 lights across the rest of the estate.

  • There are 13,870 ornaments used on the trees inside the home.

  • More than 1,960 traditional poinsettias are found throughout the estate.

  • 238 fresh wreaths and sprays along with 90 faux pieces are used across the estate.

It’s been over a year since I learned that they were filming this movie and I have waited not so patiently since then to watch it. I just hope it lives up to the magical experience that I’ve created in my head. I should probably do a review … stay tuned for a future post about my thoughts on the movie. Yikes, the pressure is on you, Hallmark!

What if I told you that there's a hidden oasis of relaxation, without the scorching UV rays and pesky sand, where you can disconnect from everyday noise and reconnect with nature? It’s time to try forest bathing!

What is Forest Bathing?

No, it's not taking a bath amidst the trees (though that could be quite an adventure!). Forest bathing, or "Shinrin-yoku" as it's known in Japan, is the practice of immersing yourself in the soothing embrace of nature, particularly the forest. It's not a bath in the traditional sense but more like a sensory soak in nature's serene beauty. The term was coined in Japan in the 1980s and has since gained popularity as an alternative form of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Not Your Average Hike

Unlike hiking or trekking, forest bathing doesn't involve conquering peaks or covering vast distances. It's a slow, mindful, and meditative experience. I propose a different approach. Why not focus on implementing small-scale actions that can seamlessly integrate into your day, rather than viewing self-care as a separate task that can be postponed or shuffled aside? By incorporating even a single intentional act of self-care into your daily routine, you can steer yourself toward a greater sense of well-being. Besides, if you’re feeling better, your business will be in better hands.

In that spirit, here are 6 examples of little ways you can add some self-care into your work day, starting today.

Take Real Breaks

Instead of mindlessly getting caught up in phone scrolling as a means of escaping stress throughout the day, grant yourself the gift of a genuine break. Set a time limit, allowing yourself to fully detach from work without any guilt. Just as we often decorate our homes to reflect the shifting seasons, you can also curate your meals to match. Shopping for in-season produce is also more likely to be locally sourced, supporting local farmers and minimizing the environmental strain of long-haul transportation. Summertime brings a fresh, colorful harvest with truly endless possibilities. So, let's explore the summer produce in season and discover some extremely easy meal and snack ideas to make the most of them!

Summer Fruits:

  • Berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries

  • Melons: watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew

  • Stone fruits: peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries

Summer Vegetables:
